13 students are granted 5.5M worth of college scholarship by Hedcor

Rizabelle Dapyawen of Barangay Kayapa in Bakun has always dreams of becoming an educator. She plans on becoming a Filipino teacher who dedicates her time and skills to schools in her locality.

Yet, living off of farming, Rizabelle’s big family of seven struggles to make ends meet. Going for a college education may even sound like a luxury.

With Hedcor, however, she will no longer have to worry over her college expenses after qualifying for Hedcor’s 100% scholarship.

“I’m really grateful for the scholarship especially because I’m the eldest daughter. After I finish my studies, I’m going to help my family, especially my siblings so that they can finish their studies as well.” shared Rizabelle during the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement for the said scholarship.

Rizabelle is only one of the 13 qualified scholars who will benefit from the scholarship which is inclusive of tuition and miscellaneous fees as well as books, uniform and transportation allowances.

Of the total number of scholars, six are from Ilocos Sur, five from Benguet and two in Mt. Province. All scholars hail from host communities where Hedcor’s hydro-power facilities are housed.

Throughout the years, Hedcor has always dedicated its initiatives to education as it aims to advance communities. Romeo Catingub, Hedcor’s Corporate Social Responsibility Supervisor, further emphasizes the importance of education among the youth.

“The world is changing at a rapid pace and we want to equip our children with higher education as it provides a competitive edge in the career market and increases one’s understanding of the world. We want them to be aware of what they are actually capable of, so they can improve their lives as well as contribute to their families and communities,” says Catingub.

Hedcor, a run-of-river hydro-power arm of AboitizPower, operates 22 plants across the country, 11 of which is in Luzon. Hedcor currently has a total installed capacity of 227.36 MW of clean and renewable energy.
