BAGUIO CITY
The health department in the highland Cordillera recorded at least six fireworks-related injuries (FWRI), mostly
in Baguio City, from December 21 to 26. Four of the incidents were from Baguio City, while Kalinga and Mountain Province had one case each. Although this is a small number compared to injuries from other regions, DOH-Cordillera reiterated its reminder to shun away from using firecrackers while celebrating the holidays, especially during the New Year. All injury cases in CAR were male victims with an age range from 7 to 14 years old.
Three victims sustained eye injuries, while three suffered blast or burn injuries, though not amputated. Two of the cases were admitted to health facilities. The DOH advised especially children to avoid picking up unexploded
fireworks with their hands, but instead carefully transfer the unexploded fireworks using a broom and dustpan or any similar tool to a bucket of water. According to the DOH victims who sustain firework-related injuries should seek
immediate medical attention because injuries may lead to complications like tetanus and other infections.
