ATUBAN, POLON DOMINANT GAMES POWER TEAMS TO SEMIS WINS

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet

Mary Ann Atuban and Jasmynne Polon both whipped up a storm to lead their respective teams to straight sets victory Wednesday to start their finals bid in the Cong. Eric Go Yap Congressional Cup – Benguet Women’s Volleyball
League at the Benguet Sports Complex here. Atuban scored 21 points to lead Tuba past a scrambling Tuba side for a 25-15, 25-10, 25- 13, while Polon matched that output and led Sablan past La Trinidad 25-19, 25-21, 25-20.

Atuban was virtually unstoppable as she poured in 16 attack points, seven of which in the second set, fired two
service aces and blocked twice as she led the fourth seed past the third seeded team in the league. She almost did everything as she dug deep to nullify Kapangan’s bombs and like in the quarterfinals set up for a kill for setter Ivy Sampayan. “We are starting to gel nicely,” said the former University of Baguio Lady Cardinal who drilled kills that
left a crowd wanting for more beautiful spikes from one of the city’s best hitters in the last decade.

“We are a much better team now,” added the public works employee and mother of one, thus the name Mama Mary
from her younger teammates.  was a performance that rubbed off to her teammates with Radinka Dumawor backing
her up with 10 markets, while Kate Payang added eight in the 64 minute encounter which was a revenge of sorts against their eliminations conquerors. Lovely Balagat led Kapangan with 11 points as she tried to boost the morale of her teammates that came to the game sans coach Danny Edwardo.

Xhyrielle Sasa added eight markers even if she started late in the first set after coming in late. Edralyn Mangantulao said that they will come back stronger in the next game, on Sunday, against La Trinidad, while offering no excuse for their loss. Meanwhile, it was Abigail Cunanan who made possible the Sablan win after a 30 excellent sets that allowed all of Sablan’s big guns pounding the ball at will. Hanna Mae Dumpit and Sheryl Estal added 15 and 11
points, respectively for the yet undefeated Sablan which is 14- 0 win-loss in the league.
