Baguio City Shelves Search For Outstanding Citizens

BAGUIO CITY (June 2, 2020) – Baguio City’s search for exemplary residents have been temporarily shelved as conditions brought by the COVID19 pandemic are not favorable this year.
As early as June of every year, organizers start the search for the Outstanding Citizens of Baguio (SOCOB), an annual feat given to Baguio residents who had significant contributions to the development of the city and their fellow people.
Nominees for the search are persons who made extraordinary services for the betterment of Baguio and people through their work, advocacies and accomplishments which are beyond their occupations or lines of duty and responsibility.
Some of those who were awarded as outstanding citizens are ordinary people like the security guard who returned a bag with a big amount of cash to its owner.
The candidate should be a resident of Baguio for at least 10 years, though not necessarily continuous.
They must never have been convicted in any crime and have good reputation and respectable credibility in the community.

The nomination may be done by any individual or group.
Every September 1 of each year, the awardees are given tribute during the celebration of Baguio City’s charter anniversary.  They are automatically be included in the society of SOCOB awardees.
But this year’s supposed search, members of the SOCOB awardees and the City Government of Baguio announced its cancellation.
The group said that this is in view of the inapt conditions brought by the Covid 19 pandemic.
“The SOCOB community joins the citizenry of Baguio in conscientiously working toward the healing of our City and adapting to our new normal,” it explained.
