Baguio Goes On Mass Testing…. For Horses Though

BAGUIO CITY (June 17, 2021)— Baguio City will undertake mass testing.  On horses though.
The Baguio City Veterinary and Agriculture Office (CVAO) will be conducting mass testing to horses this month at the famous Wright Park in Pacdal, home of the famous tourist destination —horse back riding.
The testing wants to identify horses infected with Equine Infectious Anemia (IEA) known as Swamp Fever.
According to Baguio City Veterinarian Dr. Brigit Piok, they are going to get samples from the horses.  They will be partnered with personnel of the Regional Animal Diagnostic Laboratory of the  Department of Agriculture (RADL-DA) Cordillera.
CVAO said 21 horses were found to be positive of the swamp fever.  Six have died and 15 are in isolation.
Swamp fever is a retroviral disease of equids that maybe characterized by acute and chronic recurring clinical  signs including fever, anemia, edema and cachexia in some animals. Said disease targets usually horses. Many horses have very mild symptoms on first exposure.
Dr. Piok said the disease can spread speedily among the horses through mosquito bites.  She added that that the disease is treatable,  but the virus has no known vaccine against it yet.
She stressed that they are on the move to arrest the possible spread of the disease among the horses here, especially those being brought to the city’s famous parks for tourists.
