Baguio sends 262-man delegation to Batang Pinoy

BAGUIO CITY – A total of 262 athletes and coaches headed by city sports officer Gaudencio Gonzales will represent the Summer Capital to the 8th Batang Pinoy Competition slated on August 25 to September 1 at Puerto Princesa, Palawan.

Gonzales said Baguio is the defending champion of the prestigious annual sporting event for athletes 15 years old and below having garnered 85 gold, 81 silver and 194 bronze medals in the more than 20 athletic disciplines last year.

The delegations from Cebu and Laguna placed second and third places, respectively, and are once again expected to give Baguio a tough challenge for the top spot, he added. “Despite the stiff competition, we are very confident to successfully defend our title this year as we ask for all your prayers and support,” he said.

Gonzales disclosed that Baguio athletes have historically excelled in combat sports like taekwondo, muay thai, wushu, arnis, judo and the like where most of its medal haul is garnered.

Sports office staff Paul Rillorta said that around 500 delegations from all over the country are expected to participate in the week-long competition.
