More of a role player as a Lady Falcon for the Adamson University, Baguio born and raised Sharya Nicolle Ancheta will bring her brand of game to the professional league after getting drafted last Monday during the inaugural Premiere Volleyball League rookie draft at the Novotel Manila Araneta City in Quezon City. Ancheta was the first pick in the second round by the Zus Coffee Thinderbelle which earlier won over the 6’2” top pick Thea Gagate, formerly of De La Salle University.
The daughter of probably the most exiting local cager ever, Ryan Ancheta, was drafted by one of the newer PVL teams which placed dead last in the just concluded All-Filipino conference. The late Ancheta’s sole daughter was one of the 47 players and one of the 19 University Athletic Association of the Philippines alumni when the PVL introduced the draft to improve competitions. She said that she will bring her specialty to the Zus table which is on defense while also saying that she is proud and thankful to be a member of the squad, during a post draft interview aired by ONE Sports.
The City Camp Proper resident Ancheta helped Adamson to a sixth-place finish with a 4-10 win loss record of the eight school UAAP. National University defeated the University of Santo Tomas, 2-0, to win the title, it’s second in three years. Local contractor Joselito Tan earlier expressed elation of the prospect that his grand niece gets drafter. “I hope she gets drafted,” Tan told this writer. Tan is the younger brother of the young ancheta’s grandmother, Mila, who tied a few years ago. In his Facebook Page Wall, Tan wrote: “Congratulations to my Apo.. Sharya Nicolle Ancheta. The whole family is very proud of your achievement.” Tan’s older sister is Ryan’s mother.
Ancheta’s father, Ryan, was a sensational player of UB in the late 90s and helped the school to three Baguio (Benguet) Educational Athletic League titles. but was stabbed to death in 2004. He was then playing for the Baguio Cardinals in the defunct National Basketball League. Ancheta was impressive during the draft when she was picked ahead of former Ateneo de Manila team captain and libero Roma Mae Doromal who was acquired by Capital1 Solar Spikers. She is also ahead of UST Tigress Pierre Abellada, who will join the Farm Fresh Foxies along with number four pick Maigan Larroza of DLSU.
Five of her Adamson teammates were also selected in the first round dominated by De La Salle University alumni with Gagate as the first. Three of the next draftees are also DLSU alums with Laila Cruz at second over-all and by Capital1, followed by erstwhile team captain Julia Coronel (Galleries Tower High Risers) and Larroza. The middle blocker Ancheta was one of the seven Adamson players seeking teams in the PVL, which had a record of nearly 23,000 fans during the finals.
Ancheta is the second Baguio raised player after Mary Joy Baron, who had a successful career with the De La Salle University, and now plays as a middle blocker for PLDT. Baron, a Baguio City National High School graduate is also featured in the Heroes Wall of Fame at the Baguio athletic bowl. Cherry Tiggo’s Mylene Paat played first for the University of Baguiobefore Adamson took her.
