BONTOC LGU STRENGTHENS SUPPORT TO NUTRITION MOVERS THROUGH TRAINERS TRAINING ON ‘IDOL KO SI NANAY’

BONTOC, Mt. Province Health workers or nutrition movers in this capital town underwent a four day “Trainers Training on Idol Ko Si Nanay” on September 3 6, 2024. The training was participated in by midwives, Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) , Barangay Health Workers (BHWs), and nurses from the Municipal Health Office (MHO) who are members of the Municipal Nutrition Council (MNC). Municipal Nutrition Action Officer Venous Faith Cofulan explained that the First 1000 Days of Life is a crucial stage in the development of a child. According to her, this period requires the undivided attention of the mother to ensure the prevention of malnutrition.

Thus, a holistic approach to dealing with this problem would need other stakeholders, such as a young mother’s group, organized breastfeeding support groups, BNS and BHWs. She added that the Idol Ko Si Nanay Training of Trainers aims to capacitate health workers at the barangay level in the promotion of the First 1000 Days in the prevention of malnutrition and to familiarize the participants with the Idol Ko Si Nanay Learning Sessions. The activity “Idol Ko si Nanay” is a 10-module class inclusive of lectures and discussions with participants to increase their knowledge of “Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) in the First 1000 (F1K) Days.”

In his message during the Opening Program, Bontoc Mayor Jerome “Chagsen” Tudlong, Jr., encouraged the participants to actively participate, learn from the resource speakers, and enjoy the training with the company of fellow health workers or nutrition action movers. Mayor Tudlong expressed high hopes that with the training, participants will have a better understanding of their responsibilities, knowledge and skills as nutrition movers in the community, thereby, improving their confidence, which can positively impact their performance.

Likewise, he lauded the health workers for their commitment to the delivery of efficient and quality healthcare services to the grassroots -the community. Further, Tudlong assured the continuous support of the present administration to the health sector. He remarked that the Bontoc LGU continues to collaborate with various agencies and national officials to secure funding for the benefit of the community. Aside from Cofulan, other experts in the field are tapped to be resource speakers.

They are Nutritionist Dietician II Jennifer Subion from the Department of Health -Drug Abuse Treatment and Rehabilitation Center Mountain Province (DOH DATRC-MP); ND III/ District Nutrition Program Coordinator Mary Dianne Monte; and Midwife IV Norma Kalang-ad who are both from the Provincial Government of Mountain Province – Provincial Health Office. The fund for the conduct of the said training was sourced from the Gender and Development (GAD) – Nutrition Program of the Bontoc Bontoc LGU.
