Effective Garbage Solution Project Maybellaine Joy N. Langbis

To help in the implementation of the Clean and Green of Becday Chasoras Lamsis Elem. School, the Supreme Pupil Government (SPG), Environmental Waste Management Program (EWMP) and Youth Environmental School Organization (YES-O) led the activities like Clean-up drive, hazard mapping, Tree and Coffee Planting and Proper Waste Management.
Waste disposal has been the problem of the school. In the previous, the SPG collected the garbage of every classroom thrice a week and dump it in the compost pit made by the parents during Brigada Eskwela. When it is full, they will cover it with soil and dig another compost pit.
Garbage cannot be controlled, it is part of our living. This problem aroused the SPG together with the EWMP and YES-O club to come up with a project on “Eco-bricks” and “Pera sa Basura” projects.
These projects aimed to reduce and reuse garbage. It will serve also an income generating project of the school. Instead of “useless” waste, they have realized that much of what we once threw away can be used again many times over.
The project started since school year 2014-2015 up to present wherein pupils were required to bring their own empty plastic bottle inside their classrooms where they will put their candy and other cellophane wrappers instead of putting them in the trashcans.
The wrappers were cut into tiny pieces for easy entrance into the small holes of the plastic bottles. Eco-bricks that were packed up were used as landscaping of the school herbary, the school park and some area of the school. Aside from plastic bottles the pupils can also make it as a pillow.
There is also a paper box of every classroom for the used papers and coupon bonds. Plastic bottles and other solid waste materials being collected by the SPG during clean-up drive were dumped but separated accordingly to the Material Recovery facility (MRF).The 4 parts compost pit and a permanent MRF were constructed to have a better place of garbage segregated.
The pupils are also encourage to bring their recycled materials at home to school instead of dumping them anywhere. The collected solid waste materials will be sold by the YES-O officers.
The fund of the recycled materials will be purchased for the school materials such as papers, pencils, ballpens, pencils, crayons and scissors. The school materials will be distributed to the pupils. It is also used to purchase cleaning materials such as soft brooms, a stick brooms, and mops of every classroom.
“Pera sa Basura” , Eco-bricks and Pillow garbage were found out as an effective way of minimizing waste wrappers with foils in the school and the community.
Indeed, this brilliant solution about garbage is very inspiring since we can really see the pupils manifesting proper waste segregation and disposal. Community as well has a great understanding on the impact of reducing, reusing and recycling of waste.
