ELECTION WORKERS TREK EVEN AT NIGHT TO DELIVER RESULTS FROM ABRA’S FARTHEST POLLING CENTER

Hours of walking even at night did not stop election workers and security forces in Barangay Buneg in this municipality to ensure a successful conduct of the 2023 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Election (BSKE). Election workers and security forces in the far-flung Sitios of Talipugo and Sap-al in Barangay Buneg safely delivered election returns after traveling for hours by foot even at night.

Provincial Election Supervisor (PES) Atty. Mae Richelle Belmes shared that the successful delivery of election results from the farthest polling place in the province completed the 100% proclamation of 2023 BSKE in the province at 12:39AM on November 1, 2023. “Election workers and security forces in Talipugo and Sap-al are heroes. It took them a lot of sacrifice to keep travelling
by foot even at night,” she said.

Marites Baroña Cortez Marquez who served as a member of the electoral board in Barangay Buneg shared in a facebook post the challenge of being an EB. She thanked the uniformed personnel of Lacub for providing security. “Hindi po madali ang papel bilang electoral board member but for the sake of a clean and honest result of the Barangay and SK election, heto kami na handang maglingkod,” she shared.

The distance of said voting centers from the Offices of the Municipal Treasurer and Election Officer is almost 48 hours by foot. Meanwhile, the PES with the PNP, and Philippine Army reported a relatively peaceful 2023 polls with some issues during the voting process and canvassing of votes such as an illegal discharge of firearm that delayed the casting of votes in Lapat Balantay in Tineg, missing election paraphernalia, and presence of political figures in polling centers which were immediately addressed.
