Former environmental planner surrenders Philippine Eagle in CENRO Baguio

A former environmental planner Benedict Solang from Baguio City has surrendered a Philippine Eagle in the Community and Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Baguio under its Protected Area Management and Biodiversity Conservation Section (PAMBCS) on Wednesday morning, June 7.
Solang said the eagle was turned over to him by his daughter-in-law Joven Fernandez which was also passed to her by a concerned citizen. The eagle was put in a cage and was fed with meat for a few months.
The environmental planner said, “The eagle was found in Nueva Viscaya during a typhoon few months ago by a concerned citizen before it was passed to my daughter-in-law.”
“If you have found a wild life, you should surrender to the proper authority, to the DENR, for proper assessment and caring,” Solang added.
The eagle will undergo further examination by a medical veterinarian to determine its condition. After the determination of the eagle’s condition, if it is fit then it will be ready for release in Mt. Santo Tomas Forest Reserve.
This year, three eagles were already surrendered to CENRO Baguio. The first batch was already released in the forest reserve.
Last April 10, 2017, a Philippine Hawk Eagle was also turned over by Eleno Lao-ing in the office of Mayor Mauricio Domogan which was brought to the CENRO Baguio for proper assessment of its condition. The eagle was bumped along Ambuklao Benguet-Viscaya road and was surrendered to authorities for proper medication.
Last May 11, a Crested Serpent Eagle was also turned over to CENRO Baguio by Dominic Dondonen. The eagle was found to be weak and blind after fighting several times with the crows. After the medical assessment, the eagle was given vitamins; however, it was euthanized due to its weak condition and low survival rate.
CENRO Baguio also reminds everyone who found any wildlife to turn over to the said office for proper assessment and release in protected areas. IAN JEFREY ADDATU, CENRO Baguio / ABN
