STA. MARCELA, ApayaoIfugao will host the Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association
sports meet in 2025 which is after Apayao’s turn next year, the Department of Education Cordillera announced here recently. “It will be Apayao for next year and Ifugao in 2025,” DepEd Cordillera director Estela Carino said during the press conference it held with Apayao officials led by Gov.
Elias Bulut at the clubhouse of this town. Carino said that Ifugao is already building a sports
complex in Lamut but which could not be finished by next year.
She said that the land of the eighth wonder of the world was interested in hosting the annual sports meet but it could not finish it by next year, thus it requested the DepEd that it will instead take charge in 2025. Reportedly, Tabuk City is also interested to host the event in 2025 and it may challenge Ifugao. The country’s second biggest city in terms of land area finished eighth and last during last month’s CARAA in Baguio which spurred its city officials to make the bid for 2025 so its
athletes can improve on their performance.
When Apayao separated from Kalinga in 1995, it was the perennial bottom feeder but hosting the event in 2013 saw the region’s “Last Frontier” improve to third. “Since then, Apayao has finished third and improved to second the last time,” said Bulut. Asked if Apayao could once again host, Bulut said “We are ready” and echoed by four of the seven municipal mayors present during the Kapihan. “We will just wait for the formal communication from the province (Apayao),” said
Carino. Bulut even offered to host last April the CARAA but Baguio officials later acceded to the DepEd Cordillera request.
Later in May, Apayao hosted the basketball and volleyball games where it won three of the four volleyball titles. Carino assured that team events will be included in the games next year as holding it separate from the individual events is costlier.
