La Union men wear heels for women empowerment

BANGAR, La Union – The Rural Health Unit of Bangar, La Union conducted Men in Heels Modeling and Fun Walk at the Sangguniang Bayan mini gym in Bangar, La Union on March 22, 2019 in observance of the National Women’s Month celebration themed “Women Making HERstory.
We Make Change Work for Women”. The event was in coordination with the Provincial Government of La Union through the Provincial Health Office.
Male participants from the Philippine National Police (PNP), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Barangay Council and Municipal Government employees of Bangar wore heels to show men’s unity with women in promoting gender sensitivity, and rethinking their attitudes towards women.
Around 30 men in heels walked around the town plaza and showcased their talent and modeling skills in heels. The wearing of heels symbolizes how the sufferings of women today-be it from violence, inequality, or some other forms.
Various games were also conducted in line with the daily roles and work of women in the society.
“Daytoy nga aktibidad tatta nga aldaw ket ipariknana kaniatayo a lallaki haan nga bareng bareng iti responsibilidad iti maysa nga ina iti uneg ti balay ken kagimungan,” Bangar Vice Mayor Virgilio Dabalos said during the event. (This activity today lets us, men, feel the versatility of a woman’s responsibility at home and in the community).
The event ended with the awarding of winners and giving of Certificates of Appreciation to the participants. Men in Heels Walkathon Champion Roel Flores from the Philippine National Police (PNP) received a cash prize, sash, trophy, and a mobile phone.
Salvador Rilloraza and Cherwin Manzano both from Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management of Bangar won 1st and 2nd runner-up respectively, and took home cash prizes, trophy and sash.
Cash prizes were also given for special awards which include Highest in Heels won by Ruben Sagandoy from PNP and King ofthe Runway (Cat walk) won by Flores.
