Luko men wear high heels’

Laoag City (February 28, 2020) — To open the International Women’s Month this March, Iluko men are proudly wearing high heels to campaign for gender sensitivity and women empowerment in Ilocos Norte.

A parade of men in high heels will bring twist and fun to kick off Ilocos Norte’s celebration of Women’s Month, said Provincial Population Program Officer Janet London.

On March 2, “Taray Sapatos de Takong,”, Provincial Capitol male employees parades on high heels for a kilometer or so, in front of the Puregold Laoag, straight through the J.P. Rizal Street and ending in front of the Provincial Capitol. “For a change, men will experience the struggle and excitement in wearing heels,” she mused.

“Men As Parade Muses” A mardi gras-themed “Kinni–kinni” (swaying hips) parade joined by the different local government units all over Ilocos Norte will highlight the month’s celebration on March 18.

Yet also to bring twist in this year’s Women’s Month celebration, ‘straight men’ who are 25 years old and above will be the contingent’s muses for the ”Kinni-kinni” Parade.

They are expected to wear at least two inches high heels except for wedge,” added London. London explained that the celebration will underscore the importance of gender sensitivity along with the promotion of women’s rights and welfare.

”Our focus this year is gender sensitivity. We aim to sensitize men. At least if men wear heels, they will understand the plight of women every time they wear these types of footwear. Aside from that, they will be aware of the responsibilities of women, including our domestic role.”

The contested categories for the “Kinni–kinni” parade will be the “Best Kinni–kinni Group,” the “Kinni–kinni Queen,” and the “Best Buntis.”
