Sandi Menchi Abahan repeated as the best female runner in the 2022World’s Highest Marathon Event at the highest mountain in Africa earlier this month.
The Baguio-based runner, who won the obstacle course race in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, clocked 2 hours, three minutes, and 12 seconds to rule the vertical kilometer where former SEAG marathon queen came in second at 2:18.03 and defend her title in the Mount Kilamanjaro race.
Kam Kaur of India was a distant third with a 3:01.03 clocking. In a marathon, Abahan ruled anew as she clocked 9:00.50 with Kaur at a distant second at 13:49.14. Martes did not finish. Abahan also topped the ultra marathon with a clocking of 11:03.22. Martes and Kaur were DNF and disqualified.
“I got lost,” Martes posted on her Facebook page. Meanwhile, Elias Tabac settled for two-second-place finishes and third as world champion Roberto Delorenzy took all three races.
The Swiss took the vertical kilometer in a record fashion of 1:17:20 and win it comfortably. Local Mussa Mwakyusa came in second at 1:52.57 and Filipino Elias Tabac finished third at 1:58.54.
In the highest marathon, the Swiss were also dominant after clocking 7:35.46 with Tabac running second at 7:59.17. Local Emmanuel Paolu was a distant third after clocking 8:54.29.
It was the same order in the highest ultra marathon with Delorenzi ruling it at 8:52.31. Some 32 minutes later, Tabac checked in while Paulo is more than an hour behind at 10:43.56.
