NIA-CAR undertakes P1.5-B irrigation projects

LA TRINIDAD, BENGUET – The government, through the National Irrigation Authority (NIA)-Cordillera, will undertake some 284 irrigation projects worth P1,593,863 billion this year.
Benito Espique Jr., acting regional manager of NIA-Cordillera, said the amount will benefit some 8,912 farmers and   targeted to generate a total new irrigable area of 2,823 hectares and restore some 426 hectares.
Of the 284 projects, 103 will be in Kalinga with an allocation of P339.9 million; Ifugao gets 48 projects with P391M; Mt. Province, 44 with P143.066M share; Benguet, 39 with P172,350M; Abra, 28 with P161.300M; and Apayao, 22 projects with P326.965M share.
These projects include Small Irrigation Projects (SIP) which got the biggest allocation with P330 million, followed by restoration/repair and rehabilitation on Communal Irrigation System (CIS) with P215,294 million, improvement/repair and rehabilitation of National Irrigation System (NIS) with P177,093 million.
Balikatan Sagip Patubig Program (BSPP) got P159 million while the total amount of P243,672 million was allocated for  the expansion of existing CIS and NIS.
Other projects include climate change adaptation (P46M), repair of groundwater pump irrigation systems (P10,250M) and component  of the agrarian reform program (P8.3M), among others. PRIMO AGATEP / ABN
