By reflecting on the sacrifices of Philippine national heroes and inspiring the present generation to safeguard the sovereignty of the Philippines, the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU), under the leadership of Gov. Raphaelle Veronica “Rafy” Ortega-David, celebrated the 126th Philippine Independence Day on June 12, 2024, at the
Provincial Capitol Grounds, City of San Fernando, La Union. Vice Gov. Mario Eduardo C. Ortega, Board Member Cynthia Angelica M. Bacurnay, Board Member Gerard C. Ostrea, and Ex-Officio Board Members Pablo C. Ortega and Harold Dave E. Sibuma, along with Chief of Hospitals, Department Heads, and PGLU employees graced the event to give due honor to the commemoration.
It commenced with flagraising and wreath-laying ceremonies, symbolizing respect and gratitude to the heroes who fought for the country’s independence. Embracing the theme, “Kalayaan Kinabukasan. Kasaysayan.” the event highlighted the pursuit of freedom by Filipino forefathers in history and their envisioned future for a free nation.
Gov. Rafy, represented by Executive Assistant Eleazar Belgica, called for La Union PROBINSYAnihan in the province’s reflection on independence, “Ang tunay na kalayaan ay makakamtan natin kung bawat isa sa atin ay kikilos para sa ikabubuti ng ating probinsya’t bayan… nakikita ito sa ating mga gawain at desisyon, kung paano natin
pinapahalagahan ang ating mga kapwa.”
She underlined that through volunteerism, lending a hand, and showing initiatives, genuine representation and
freedom for all can be achieved. The event also marked the culmination of National Flag Day, symbolizing unity and
patriotism among the people of La Union. Ultimately, the Independence Day celebration of PGLU honored the past and encouraged a collective vision for the future.
