Pisay scholarship application extends until Sept. 21

LAOAG CITY – The Philippine Science High School (PSHS) in Region 1 has extended the application for the 2018 National Competitive Examination (NCE) until September 21.
Campus Director Ronnalee Orteza said the extension is due to the declaration of class and work suspensions in most provinces in the region in light of Typhoon Ompong.
“This will give the grade six pupils in private and public schools more time to send application for the scholarship,” Orteza said.
She said Region 1 campus has targeted a total of 1,700 applicants this year.
To be eligible for the NCE, applicants must have a final grade of 85 percent or higher in Science and Mathematics subjects reflected in their Grade 5 Report Card.
If the report card showed a rating below 85 percent in the two subjects, a student will need to prove he/she belongs to the upper 10 percent of the class.
Among the benefits that will be availed of by the scholar-awardees are free tuition fee, free loan on textbooks, monthly stipend, including uniform, transportation and living allowances for low-income groups.
In return, the scholars must enter into a scholarship agreement with PSHS to take a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) course after graduation.
Among the STEM courses that graduates must take are Aerospace Engineering, Astronomy, Biochemistry, Biology, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, and others.
“If the scholars failed to abide with the agreement, which there are some cases under our monitoring now, they will be compelled to pay in return after due notice,” said Orteza.
According to Orteza, the payment is approximately amounting from P160,000 to P240,000 comprising the six years of being a scholar.
Examination date will push through as scheduled on October 20, 2018 in designated venues.
In Ilocos Norte, testing centers will be at the Mariano Marcos State University in Laoag City and in Batac City secondary schools. CHERRY JOY D. GARMA, PIA-Ilocos Norte / ABN
