Prices of Benguet veggies shoot up amidst monsoon rains

BAGUIO CITY (August 4, 2021)—  The prices of highland vegetables coming from Benguet and nearby areas shoot up amidst the continuous heavy downpours over in North Luzon for almost two weeks now.
The League of Associations at La Trinidad Vegetable Trading Post spokesperson Agot Balanoy said vegetable prices at the vegetable trading post and also at the Benguet Agri Pinoy Trading Center (BAPTC) both in La Trinidad, Benguet went up.
Balanoy said this is because of the difficulties in transporting vegetable products. She added the vegetable farmers are having a hard time because of closed farm-to-market roads and road cuts caused by landslides and soil erosions.
Balanoy also said there is a lack of supply of vegetable produce as some crops were damaged by the heavy rains.
Vegetable prices at the “bagsakan” area of the La Trinidad Vegetable Trading post rates at P45-50.00 a kilo for Cabbage rare ball Green, P50-55 a kilo of Cabbage Wonder ball while P55 to 60 a kilo of Cabbage Scorpio Green. Chinese Cabbage or Wongbok 1st class meanwhile is at P25 to P30.00 and Benguet beans ordinary is at P30-45.00 a kilo. Sayote 1st class is at P20-25 a kilo.
According to Balanoy, most of the prices of the vegetables are above cost of production that compensate the hard labor of the vegetable farmers.
