Simmering Summer Plaguing Fishpoond Growers On Ilocos Sur Town

BAGUIO CITY (May 17, 2021)—The San Vicente, Ilocos Sur municipal agriculture office recorded at least P2 million worth of losses from the fishkill at Urdas, Barangay San Sebastian San Vicente.
MAO chief Genesis Fronda said, the fishkill in the tilapia fishponds was caused by the extreme heat being experienced in the area. He said that 30 fishpond owners were affected.
Fronda said that the fishpond owners are just recovering from the financial losses they exprienced last year.
He said that the aqua farmers will again suffer the same fate, even worse with the pandemic is still very much around.
He said the fishpond owners were expecting to harvest their fishes but the fishkill occured.
Fronda said the owners incurred high expenses in maintaining their fishponds and some of them even borrowed capital.
Genesis said the municipal government of San Vicente will extend financial assistance to those affected by the fishkill.
