SIN-AGI, BISHOP CRUZ AND KABAYANIHAN OFFICIALS UNVEIL MURAL

The Sin-Agi Artists, officials of the Kabayanihan barangay and Bishop Rafael Cruz unveiled Friday the Kabayanihan mural in front of the Bishop’s House here. The 44th mural project of Sin-Agi Artists, the mural depict at least three set of figures, first the Baguio Cathedral with a priest and a big crowd of people, a group of men carrying a house and
young adults teaching elderlies the use of modern gadgets. Councilor Leandro Yangot, Jr. said that the three set of
images depict the coming of the Catholic priests from Belgium who evangelized the people of Baguio and the Cordillera in the early 1900s.

The second he said is the barangay which got its name from the Filipino value of bayanihan or the act of helping one another. The third being the role of the youth of the said barangay in coming out with the nearly 30-meter mural.
Barangay chair Eladio Ortenero said that they have been seeking help from the Department of Public Works and Highways to have a mural at the said wall as early 1992. “We have been asking the DPWH that a mural be placed at the wall, but it is only now that we get one,” said Ortenero during the program proper at the Bishop’s House, where the participants were feted to lunch.

Yangot is the driving force behind the Sin-Agi Artist where young artists are employed to undertake art works and are rewarded for their efforts. The 44th mural for Sin-Agi, Yangot said that most of the murals they have been tasked to do have been a “work of love.” “I am happy if the host barangay help us fund the work, pay the young artists if not then I will shoulder the expenses,” said Yangot, who since returning from Switzerland after his second stint as three term councilor have started a free art lessons at the park and at the Baguio athletic bowl.

The graduates of said art lessons are now his apprentices that help in the mural projects in barangays. Since launching the very first Sin-Agi Artists at Legarda Road, the group has gone to the different barangays where murals start to rise to make Baguio “a real creative city”, said Yangot during the inauguration and blessing. The Sin-Agi Artists was founded by Yangot in December 2022 and in January 2023 started the Legarda Road mural project
in front of the Europa Condominiums. Yangot said the inauguration actually kick-starts the Sin-Agi’s version of the arts month of February.

The events include an open art competition at the Art Bank at the Baguio athletic bowl on Saturday, February 1 which include a traditional painting and digital painting. Each category offer a PhP3,000 for the winner, a PhP2,000 for the second placer and PhP1,000 for the third place. Next Saturday, the Sin-Agi heads to Imelda Village where the mural at said barangay will be unveiled, then in the afternoon, it will be a free art and guitar lessons at the Baguio
City National High School.

A project with the Advocating Tradition for Onward Resilience for Indigenous People (ATOR for IPs), the Yangot and company will go to Salud Mitra on February 15 for the inauguration of the mural and later a free cultural dance class. On February 22, two murals will be inaugurated in the morning, the Lucnab and Lualhati murals. In the
afternoon, it will be creative urban gardening seminar at the Art Bank at the athletic bowl from 1 to 3PM and the araw ng parangal also at the art bank at 3PM.

The next day, the Leyan Art Museum will have an open house. On February 28, three art murals will be launched in the three Bakakeng barangays – Norte/Sur, SLU/SVP and Central – in the morning. Then at 1 PM onwards, it will be the closing ceremony at the Art Gallery at the BCBHS. The Art Gallery was envisioned by Yangot as early as 2023 when he started the construction he funded.
