Strawberry forever?

Strawberry Festival in La Trinidad is just around the corner. Soon enough you will see different kinds of product made up of this sweet red fruit. One example is the famous strawberry wine, but do you know that there are rumours that some of the strawberry wines being sold are fake? What do I mean? Well, because of the demand of consumers to suppliers for the strawberry product not only for food but also for pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and detergent, some has to make an alternative so the orders of the public can be met. Now the question is how will you compare the real strawberry wine to a fake one? Food and Science Research and Innovation Violeta Salda said that “The true Strawberry Wine is properly sealed, may pagka-mahal ang presyo at makikita mo kung puro siya at hindi contaminated kapag wala kang makikitang parang buo-buo sa loob nito” In a research, strawberry wine will take months and years to ferment but saleable as early as 6 months.

It will be a damage contributing factor to La Trinidad if the fake strawberry wines becomes an issue for this municipality under the Province of Benguet  is known for this production.

Committee on Tourism Coun. Roderick Awingan said that “If such speculation were true then it’s high time that we have to coordinate it with DTI and FDA or better yet, we have to regulate a law to apprehend such matter.” In line with Agri-Tourism, especially now that the farm to market road project of DOT and DA offered an easy access in promoting different kind of farm product.

Strawberry is not a year round product of La Trinidad. However, it is not a secret that La Trinidad Strawberry is still the sweetest of its kind. But if it is in demand, how do we make it forever just like their theme of this year’s Strawberry Festival? It is about time to make a new technic and that is to do green houses, try the hanging strawberries. It is not necessary that it is planted on the ground where it can be flooded and soaked into acidic rainwater. So hopefully, the project of Department of Agriculture for the water irrigation of Strawberry Farm will push through this year for a cleaner liquid to water and wash the strawberry, flowers and highland vegetables before they are packed and sent to the market.
