The bank robbery

The recent bank robbery in Binondo, Manila is turning out to be one for the books, both in its puzzling execution and the reaction of the supposed victims.

From a narration of events gathered by the Manila Police District under the leadership of Police Brig. Gen. Vicente Danao the following disturbing facts have surfaced: one, the usual and regular business hours of the banking facility allegedly victimized – Metrobank’s Santo Cristo branch in Manila’s Binondo district – is at 9 o’clock in the morning, however the alleged robbers were able to enter the bank at 8:43 a.m. without the use of any violence or force to get inside; two, the bank employees apparently refused law enforcement authorities from entering the bank premises immediately and right after the alleged robbery, and it took an appeal from the city mayor to break the impasse; and third, the management of Metrobank came out with a statement saying that none of their clients lost money in that incident.

From the above we have to ask the following: since the police authorities are saying that a robbery had indeed occurred in that Metrobank branch in Binondo then it follows that they have to present proof that the heist really happened by revealing what was taken out of the bank.

If no client of the bank lost any money in that robbery then was it important documents or certificates, or other types of instrumentality stored and owned by the bank which was absconded by the robbers? Why would the employees of the bank initially prevent the police from entering their company premises for around two hours?

Brig. Gen. Danao, Chief of the Manila Police District came out with a statement saying that they (police) were puzzled as to why they were refused entry into the bank immediately after the robbery had occurred, adding that it is the first hour that is most critical in their crime investigation since that is the time when the evidence to be gathered is still fresh and identification of the perpetrators, features, mannerisms, clothing, weapons, etc. can be established with a degree of exactness and certainty.

What was the reason why the employees refused entry to the police in the bank premises? In the realm of conjecture we can come up with a theory that may be the robbery was an inside job perpetrated by and with the involvement of some of the bank employees in order to remove from the said bank certain records or documents that are probably valuable to them.

From this theory the police then had to find out exactly what kind of records or monies were removed from the said bank and determine whether the employees are in fact involved and therefore liable for the robbery.

From this writer’s view there might not be anything perplexing about the whole matter and by simply conducting the appropriate investigation the whole truth about the incident will eventually come to light. But the more disturbing thing in all of this is the nature and type of crime itself, that if proven true, might signal a return of and a resurgence of bank robberies in the country.

Under the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte, bank robbery incidents have drastically gone down and that is why the recent robbery in Binondo Manila is a cause of concern for the authorities to maintain peace and order.

Finally the assurances made by the authorities that they will get to the bottom of what happened in that branch of Metrobank is a litmus test on the resolve of the police to solve crimes whatever their bizarreness or strangeness.
