LA TRINIDAD, Benguet
Powerhouse La Trinidad survived a jittery start but convincingly won on its second outing to lead the Cong. Eric Go Yap Congressional Cup Benguet Basketball League with a 2-0 win-loss card on the first week of competition even as Kabayan returns to the fold and will send a team in the women’s volleyball competitions. After escaping Kabayan,
66-65, La Trinidad went to Sablan to give Tublay a 91-53 spanking, the most lopsided win yet in the seven-day old
tournament backed by the office of Cong. Yap and the ACT-CIS Partylist.
Itogon join the defending champion at the top of the leaderboard with a similar win-loss slate. Itogon was all
business when it put Mankayan to its proper place, 98-90, last Saturday then sent to school in the 68-52 victory at the latter’s homecourt last Tuesday. Last year’s bridesmaid, Bokod, opened the league with a narrow 68-63 victory against Tuba for its lone victory in its lone appearance. Tuba, however, bounced back last Wednesday at the Benguet Sports Complex with an easy 80-59 win over Buguias and a 1-1 slate.
Kapangan debuted last Wednesday with an 86-76 win over Kibungan. Kibungan fell to 1-1 in tie with Tuba as well as
two other teams, Tublay which won over Atok Thursday at home and Bakun which eased past Sablan also last Thursday. Tublay faces powerhouse Tuba on Saturday at the Benguet Sports Complex. In other games it will be Kibungan versus Itogon at 9AM, powerhouse La Trinidad opposite Buguias at noon, Mankayan and Bokod tangling at 1:30PM and the Kapangan – Kabayan encounter at 3PM.
In volleyball, powerhouses Itogon, Kapangan, Tuba, Sablan and La Trinidad expectedly won their opening matches last Sunday all in three sets in Yap Cup’s Benguet Volleyball League Favorite Sablan opens Sunday’s five game schedule Sunday when it clashes with Bakun at 9AM, it will be followed by the Itogon-Kibungan match up. At noon, it will be Kapangan against a beefed up Tublay, then Mankayan and Bokod tangle with the winner getting its first win, then it will be Trinidad and Buguias closing the Sunday matches. Meanwhile, Kabayan will be sending a team to league after earlier saying that it will not field a squad. At present, only 12 teams are slated to compete.
