WAVE towards Self-satisfaction

The first week of April signals every parent from the public school to celebrate because it’s the end of the school year, overwhelmed by the recognitions given to those who did their best during the school year and satisfaction for those who graduated and are ready climb the next ladder of education.

The new generation spends more years in school, somehow allowing more preparation for sure employment in the future.

The implementation of k-12 seems to better address the unemployment problem in our community, especially true when technical skills will be enhanced.

However, looking at the unemployment data issued by the Philippine Statistics Authority corresponding to educational attainment, 28.2% represent those that have completed junior high school; 20.9 percent are college graduates; and 8.2% are college undergraduates.

Graduates of Junior high school include graduates under the old curriculum. The data shows that our educational curriculum needs enhancement that would minimize unemployment in the country.

Work attitude and Values enhancement (WAVE) may as well be presented and integrated in the school. As early as in the elementary level, learners develop a positive work attitude not for competition but for life.

It is nice to share to the young the components of attitude: the cognitive (appreciation of work and play); the effective (positive relationship with coworkers and lower the urge of unhealthy
competition); and the behavioral (working by heart and not to defeat somebody).

According to Katz, attitude often helps people to adjust to their environment, and will also help people retain their dignity and self-image.

Values enhancement is also very important to the development of a child. According to Rokeach, terminal values when put into practice result to comfortable life, living in a world of peace
and harmony.

I was given a chance to share the WAVE to a group of government employees and I felt the difficulty internalizing the worth of the topics.

I understand that they had heartbreaking experiences in their own workplaces from their sharing during the group discussion.

WAVE is easier to say than to put into practice for those who had adopted different attitudes toward their job.

I realized that WAVE is more effective when integrated and shared to the learner’s appended lesson in school for them to be prepared in the future job challenges.
