AFP CHIEF’S MOM LEGACY HONORED IN BRAWNER ARCHERY CUP

The legacy of the “mother” of all Cordillera archerathletes will be honored in a three day tournament that ends this Sunday which is supported by her family led by Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner, Jr. The 1st Brawner Archery Cup at the Melvin Jones from September 15 to 17 will honor the late former National Archery Association of the Philippines president Dr. Leonor Fe Brawner.

The former University of the Philippines professor will be honored via the tournament bearing her name, organizer and Baguio City National High School and Baguio City archery coach John Hongitan said, for “her legacy as our mother, mentor and grand coach in archery.” In a letter invite, Hongitan said the event this weekend is staged in the late professor’s home city first”before it
becomes part of our NSA’s (National Sports Association) Regular Event.”

The event will culminate during the birthday of the late Court of Appeals Chief Justice Romeo Brawner, Sr., the late archery coach’s husband and namesake of the general. The event is also a great venue for the athletes, Hongitan wrote, “to hone their skills and values in preparation for upcoming (events).” These includes the Philippine Sports Commission Batang Pinoy and the
Philippine National Games Championships slated on December 17-22 at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Malate, Manila.

Also, it is aimed as a training ground for the paraarchers who are going to compete in the Asian ParaGames which will be held in Hangzhou, China on October 22-28. Practice rounds started
Friday, while qualifications begun also Friday and will end Saturday. Coach Brawner started
training para-archers when she was president of the NAAP (now WAP) in coordination with the PPC/PHILSPADA NPC Philippines.

There will be four disciplines – recurve, compound, barebow and pararecurve. There are also 17
categories of the tournament with the regular recurve to be staged on Saturday in Under 15, Novice 10 M 122 cm, Novice Open 20 M 122 cm, Under 10 (U10) 20 M 122 cm, Under 13 (U13) 30 M 122 cm, Under 15 (U15) 60 M 122 cm and Under 18 (U18) 70 M 122 cm. The compound categories are U18 Men 50 M 6 rings 80, Open Men 50 M 6 rings 80 cm, U18 Women 50 M 6 rings 80 cm and Open Women 50 M 6 rings 80 cm. on Sunday.

Also on Sunday are the barebow categories: Women and Men Open 50 M 122 cm. The para-recurve on Sunday include: Para Men Open 70 M 122 cm; Para Women Open 70 M 122 cm; Para Women
Open 70 M 122 cm; Under 21 (U21) 70 M 122 cm and Under 49 (U49) /OPEN 70 M 122 cm. Members of the Brawner family led by Gen. Romeo, Jr. will hand medals, trophies and certificates to the winners during the awarding ceremony on Sunday.
