Team Apayao received Wednesday the PHP3.39 million incentive ftom the provincial government during the Kapihan with Department of Education -Cordillera and provincial officials. Gov. Elias Bulut, Jr. handed the check to the volleyball teams before the press conference with Baguio media
as mayors of four of the seven municipalities assisted him and DeoEd officials led by director Estela Carino and superintendents from the eight division offices bear witness.
“We have given PHP15,000 to gold medal winners from the original PHP10,000,” said tge governor
during the Kapihan. He said that it will be enough to buy a tablet which tge athletes could use to
improve tgere skills. Apayao is fast becoming a powerhouse in sports as leaders of the province has
given importance to sport to motivate their students. “We have given importance to sports to motivate our students, which is at the bottom in terms of learning in the region,” said Bulut.
He said that infrastructures like gyms, a tartan track, Olympic sized pool had been constructed in 2013 when Apayao hosted the annual meet. From last, Apayao imptoved to third in 2019, when it hosted anew then to second, easing past perenial bridesmaid Benguet in the last staging. “We may not be able to beat Baguio, but we have improved,” added the governor. Earlier, three of Apayao’s
volleyball teams won beating Baguio’s top young spikers.
Apayao has earlier made its mark in the three year delayed annual competitions when it leap frogged past Benguet to finish second during the regular competitions last May 1 and now added four mints in the team event which is the most sought after basketball. Apayao’s spikers did not
only clinch the gold medals in elementary girls and boys but the secondary girls. Apayao defeated their fierce voleyball rivals Baguio City in three intense championship matches last June 4.
Hosted by the province, the two-day regional sports meet held in EKB Gymnasium in Pudtol witnessed the rise of Apayao volleyball squads who proved to be an unstoppable force throughout the tournament. In elementary girls, team Apayao, represented by Alem Elementary School (AES)
outplayed team Baguio in a three set thriller filled with intense rallies and breathtaking plays.
Baguio’s boys squad also suffered the same fate when it came tumbling down against the kids from the Kabugao Central School (KCS) squad in the elementary boys category after a hard-fought
championship match.
Moreover, team Apayao, composed of Pudtol Vocational High School (PVHS) volleybelles, continued their impressive run in the highlyanticipated championship match against Baguio in
secondary girls. Entering the finals with unblemished record, the home team displayed exceptional athleticism as they secure the coveted title in four sets. Coached by Myrien Agustin (Elem. Girls), Beverly Biyong (Elem. Boys), and Marieflor Tomas (Sec. Girls), all three volleyball squads will
represent the region in the Palarong Pambansa prequalifying meet to be held on July 17-21 in Laoag City.
In a post, the coaches said: “As the victorious teams celebrate their triumphant conquest of the elusive title, the entire province joins them in acknowledging their achievements.” Gov. Elias C. Bulut, Jr. and Congresswoman Eleanor C. Bulut-Begtang extend their commendation to the athletes for their exceptional performances and welldeserved victories.
