Baguio logs two Omicron cases

BAGUIO CITY(January 19, 2021)—-The Center of Health Development of the Department of Health (DOH-CHD) in the Cordillera confirms the detection of two cases of Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of concern in Baguio City.
The health department reported that one is a close contact of an individual infected with Corona Virus Disease (Covid 19).
The person is asymptomatic and without travel history outside Baguio City 14 days before specimen collection.
The specimen was collected on December 14, 2021 which turned out positive for COVID-19 on December 15, 2021.
The specimen was then sent to Philippine Genome Center (PGS) on December 23, 2021 for Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) and was reported positive for Omicron Variant on January 15, 2022.
Meanwhile, the other patient experienced signs and symptoms of Covid 19 and had no travel history outside Baguio City 14 days prior to onset of illness.
The specimen was collected on December 22, 2021 and reported positive for COVID-19 on December 24, 2021. The specimen was sent to PGS for WGS on December 28 and was reported positive for Omicron Variant on January 15, 2022.
The Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (RESU) is currently investigating these cases and tracing all their possible close contacts.
With the detection of Omicron variant cases, the public is urged to adhere to the minimum public health standards, wear face masks properly, wash hands with soap and water or alcohol frequently, observe physical distancing, ensure proper ventilation, and avoid crowded areas.
The DOH also strongly encourages eligible individuals to get vaccinated and boosted immediately. Vaccines are still our best defense and proven to be safe, effective, and free.
“Let’s remain vigilant and continue to keep our guards on for Omicron,” reminded the DOH.
Baguio City again logged a record high of 646 in a single day on Tuesday.
The City Health Services Office (HSO) confirmed the number as of 5:00 PM of January 18, 2022.   There are also three Covid-related deaths yesterday.
