BAGUIO CITY
Vehicular accidents in the Summer Capital increased, according to Baguio City Police Office (BCPO). For the first five months (January to May 27, 2025), 375 vehicular traffic incidents were recorded as compared to 322 cases for the same period last year , according to Police Major Marcy Grace Marron, BCPO’s Public Information Officer . The police data was presented during the May 28 “City Hall Hour” program. To promote road safety and raise awareness about preventing traffic incidents, BCPO has sustained its OPLAN DRIVE. OPLAN DRIVE stands for Discipline, Respect, Infrastructure, Vigilance, and Education—five key focus areas in their traffic safety strategy.
P/Major Marron explained out of the number, 307 involved reckless imprudence resulting in property damage, while 60 resulted in physical injuries and eight led to fatalities. The Central Business District (CBD) recorded the most accidents, with 166 out of the total 375 incidents occurring there, based on BCPO data. Police data showed that 356 incidents involved motor vehicles, while 19 involved motorcycles. It was learned that 95 percent of traffic incidents are caused by human error, which can also be affected by poor road conditions, weather, and driver’s skills.
