L A TRINIDAD, Benguet

The implementation and enforcement of ecological laws in the province has been strengthened following the recent approval of a 10-year solid waste management plan. The plan (solid waste
management) was approved by National Solid Waste Management Commission (NWMC), an attached agency of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). The framework will cover the period from 2019 to 2028.

Under Section 10 of Republic Act (RA) 9003 otherwise known as the Ecological Waste Management Act of 2000, provides that Local Government Units (LGUs) shall be primarily responsible for the implementation and enforcement of the provisions of the Act within their respective jurisdiction. In an interview, Sinclaire Gawiden, Community Development Officer II of Benguet Environment and Natural Resources ,said the approval will also further hasten their technical and financial assistance to the 13 municipalities of the province.

”Under this framework it boosted our implementation of solid waste management,”Gawiden said. Under the framework, local government units can avail financial assistance amounting to P1 million for ecological waste program such as construction of sanitary landfill. In recent weeks, Benguet Environment and Natural Resources sustained its environment program by distribuiting Material Recovery Facility (MRF) materials to various communities across the province.
