Mayor Benjamin Magalong approved, August 20, a city council resolution encouraging residents to “buy local” in acquiring goods and services in the Baguio, La Trinidad, Itogon, Sablan, Tuba and Tublay or BLISTT area. Resolution No. 472, series of 2020, stated that buying local refers to purchasing locally produced goods and services within the locality.
It also means patronizing local businesses and supporting local traders, dealers, producers and entrepreneurs, the measure added. “The preference to buy and patronize local products and services promotes economic growth and social stability as it strengthens local businesses which hire local people,” it stated.
Thus, buying local strengthens self-reliance and economic standing of a community, increases revenue and income, and promotes local employment, the resolution added. “In this time of challenging economic crisis because of the present (Covid-19) pandemic, there is a need to support local producers and service providers. When we buy local, we directly invest in the local economy, thus, the economy remains alive,” it stressed.
The resolution disclosed that local products may include crafts, food and food products, fruits and vegetables, other agriculture produce and by-products. It also solicits the assistance of the Department of Trade and Industry and other concerned offices to help in the endeavor’s dissemination and promotion to the public.
