DOH Caution public on diptheria immunization

The Department of Health- Center for Health Development – Cordillera Administrative Region is strongly advising the public to be cautious and mindful of the immunization of their children which can save them from acquiring communicable diseases such as Diphtheria.

Diphtheria is a bacterial infection which can involve almost any mucous membrane, but most common sites of infection are the tonsils and pharynx. This type of diphtheria can lead to obstructed breathing pattern and difficulty of breathing. The early symptoms are sore throat, loss of appetite and slight fever.

Within two to three days, the infection result in the formation of a bluish-white or grey membrane that can cover the back of the throat which can bleed resulting to gagging and difficulty of swallowing and breathing.

Cordillera had reported an increase in suspected cases of Diphtheria. We advise the public to practice good personal hygiene and proper disposal of Diphtheria antitoxins. Antibiotics (erythromycin or penicillin) are prescribed for suspected cases.

Infected persons are isolated and contacts are prescribed prophylaxis dose of antibiotics and are vaccinated with diphtheria toxoid to prevent additional cases.

The public must be aware that Diphtheria is transmitted from person to person through close physical and respiratory contact. Hence, the most effective way to control diphtheria is through prevention by immunization of children in their first year of life with three doses of diphtheria vaccine and appropriate booster doses.

All Local Government Units (LGUs) within the region are also advised to intensify and be more proactive with the immunization’s advocacy, improve health promotion and strengthen immunization campaigns to safeguard the community from the disease.
