BAGUIO CITY
The Department of Trade and Industry-Cordillera (DTI-CAR) continues to drive economic progress in Cordillera, focusing on supporting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) across the region. In 2024, DTI received 29,888 business name applications—more than last year—mostly from Baguio City, Benguet, and Abra, signaling a booming entrepreneurial spirit in Cordillera. DTI’s Negosyo Centers
have become lifelines for MSMEs, especially in remote barangays, providing training, guidance, and solutions to challenges like surplus crops and market access. “Our programs continue to evolve, proving their effectiveness in helping MSMEs, especially in far-flung areas,” said Ms. Glonica Joyce Favorito, DTI Information Officer, during the 2024 Cordillera Economic Performance press conference.
Programs like Kapatid Mentor Me and Youth Entrepreneur nurture future business leaders, while Fiesta Haraya and partnerships with
local universities celebrate Cordillera’s rich crafts and culture. The One Town One Product (OTOP) program now uses artificial intelligence (AI) to boost smarter business solutions and promote unique cultural products across the region. “AI tools can help MSMEs expand their business and adapt to changing markets.” Ms. Favorito said, highlighting DTI’s commitment to innovation and digital growth. Financial assistance remains strong, with the Small Business Corporation providing 565 million pesos in loans in 2024. These loans support businesses affected by calamities or those aiming to upgrade their operations.
Shared Service Facilities give MSMEs access to advanced technology and equipment, helping improve productivity and competitiveness in
both traditional and emerging industries. Success stories like Cheche’s Gourmet illustrate how DTI’s programs transform backyard startups into exporters. Continuous training, trade fairs, and marketing support have been key to their growth. DTI’s commitment ensures that local businesses remain at the heart of Cordillera’s economic progress, fostering growth, innovation, and opportunities for all communities in the region.
