Heroes’ 32 athlete murals unveiled

After months of delays including relocation to where to paint within the seven-hectare Baguio athletic bowl, the 32 mural works of past and present athletes will finally be unveiled Wednesday.
The eponymous Publications and Media Works, city officials, and representatives from the Bureau of Copyright and Related Rights joined athletes and the three artists in unveiling the Heroes Wall of Fame artworks on a rainy and cold Wednesday.
Gladys Anne Labsan had her 12 artworks under the Heroes Legends unveiled even as Harold Banario and Ged Alangui had 10 each under the
Heroes Martial Arts and Heroes All Sports, respectively.
The murals were originally scheduled completed in December of last year but the three artists could only start their parts of the project due to delay in funding and later the relocation when upgrade works at the lower part of the sports complex started.
Labsan was able to finish her works earlier this month as she now has 18 murals within the BAB. Her latest works include 2008 Olympics bronze medalists Mariane Mariano and Benjie Rivera, World Boxing Association light-welterweight champion Roberto Cruz, three-time world karate champion Julian Chees, and two-time SEAG marathon queen Christabel Martes and two-time SEAG champion Jearome Calica in wushu sanda and muay Thai waikru.
Labsan also painted the faces of the late councilor and probably the father of Baguio bodybuilding Nemesio Domalsin, four-time Mr. Asia Sammy Ayochok, the late former camp director of Gintong Alay Narciso Padilla, who authored the athlete’s incentive ordinance, University of Baguio founder Fernando Bautista, Sr., the late Philippine Volleyball Federation, and Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association director for Cordillera Pedro Mendoza and Philippine Wushu Federation Baguio/Cordillera president Tony Candelaria.
Labsan was responsible for painting three-time Olympian Hector Begeo, two-time Olympian Jerry Dino, former SEAG javelin queen Erlinda Lavandia, former world boxing bantamweight championship contender Rey Tam, two-time taekwondo champion Jeordan Dominguez and wushu sanda great Divine Wally at the dugouts at the grounds.
Harold Banario’s Heroes Martial Arts feature Mark Eddiva, Rhea May Rifani, and Jean Claude Saclag, judo’s Helen Dawa, Ronald and
Sharon Dino, karate-do’s Edgar Kapawen and Rey Hilario as well Alice Kate Appari (boxing), and 3x world muay Thai champion Brent Velasco.
Banario redid his Eddiva mural which was vandalized last week. “I’ll just redo it before I go home to Mankayan, Benguet,” said the former Brave Fighting Championship.
Banario was slated to go home to attend the oath-taking of his father Dario, Sr., who won the mayoralty seat in said town. Banario was responsible for painting the Team Lakay mural of Mark Sangiao, former ONE champions Eduard Folayang, Kevin Belingon, Honorio Banario (his brother), Geje Eustaquio, Stephen Loman, Crisanto Pitpitunge, and current ONE strawweight champion Joshua Pacio.
The last to join the two is Alagui who finally finished his 10 artwork at the bleachers of the athletic bowl last Monday. Heroes All Sport features Daniel Parantac (wushu taolu), Estie Guico said: “Together with heads, chiefs, and doctors of different hospitals in the province of Pangasinan, we conducted a meeting concerning health issues faced by the Pangasinenses. We also discussed techniques and solutions on how to solve these issue,..”
Also, he promised to continue the scholarship programs of the provincial government. Guico said he will be working closely with the Pangasinan State University and local universities and colleges.

Guico III added: “You’ve taught me how to be a good person and inspired me to be an excellent leader as well. Thank you because you have given me the best things in life.”
