If we look into the characteristics of successful people, teachers at that, their triumph is not only brought about by hard work but through discipline and being punctual at all times.
Punctuality means to be on time as well as maintains orderly manner in order to complete task.
It is doing right things at a given time without any excuse or delay, and handles all appointments on time.
Punctuality is connected with many qualities that are essential in leadership, teaching, as well as personal aspects of life. Most successful leaders view time as their most valuable asset.
If time is gold, lack of punctuality could cause the other person to lose it. Truly it has a negative effect on how other people view you. In fact, you may be viewed as irresponsible and rude.
Employee punctuality has further implications in the workplace. Teachers who are habitually late lose their enthusiasm.
It can affect his/her efficiency and the behavior of his/her pupils. It also wobbles the organization. It can lead to resentment among colleagues.
It may also cause the teacher to miss important information or events. And obviously, a teacher who lacks punctuality affects learning, and obviously has a negative impact on all other learning areas.
Teachers are required to finish all competencies in a given school year. Being late habitually demonstrates selfishness because the latecomer always says “my time is more valuable than yours”.
As outlined in section 46(B) (5) of the Revised Rules on Administrative Cases in The Civil Service in the Civil Service Ruling, habitual tardiness is regarded a light offense.
It is punishable by reprimand for 1st offense, suspension to one to 30 days for second offense and dismissal from service for the third offense.
The CSC said that tardiness is already habitual when an employee is late “regardless of the number of minutes, ten times a month for the last two months in a semester or two consecutive months during the year”.
However, it is no longer surprising to see employees who are habitually late building chaos in the workplace. In the rush, especially as the school year ends with many forms and due dates you will probably run into other problems that can make you even later.
Punctuality affects your reputation and the department you represent. If we make it a habit to be punctual we can be depended upon.
We can become a valuable asset to the workplace because we respect others’ time. Consistently being on time is the product of proper discipline, good planning and most importantly, respect for others’ time.
Punctuality is a skill which must be practiced and a value that should be adhered to. As a teacher which serves as role model let us then set the bar for the standard of punctuality.
Let’s promote the benefits of punctuality which filters through the rest of stakeholders and most importantly, to pupils. By doing so, I believe it will surely make our system and our country innovative and more productive.
