June 3 declared as Bicycle Day

June 3 was declared Bicycle Day in the City of Baguio in support of the International World Bicycle Day. Resolution Number 116 of 2018 acknowledges the contribution of cycling to the world’s sustainable development goals. Baguio City now encourages its citizens to use bicycles as a means of transportation. Aside from the health benefits derived from cycling, it is eco-friendly as it does not emit smoke, and it saves money as it does not use fuel. It will likewise decongest traffic problems in Baguio City even at least for a day and it only needs minimal space for parking.

Baguio City is the first in the Philippines to adopt this resolution. Councilor Elmer O. Datuin said that Baguio is the first to adopt the declaration of United Nation as a Bicycle Day of every year. Some associations of bicycle from Manila and Cebu are encouraged to adopt the declaration of June 3 as Bicycle Day. And so Baguio City will have a similar local version activity that coincides with the declaration of June 3.

In relation to this declaration, Baguio City will have lots of activities like the closure of Session Road to be used freely by bikers around the business district. And other related activities like bicycle exhibition and invitations to all the bicycle clubs all over the city for a competition maybe. From this, the tourism and special events division may look into it for a suggestion and other activities in the years to come.

Municipality of La Trinidad Councilor Guiller Galwan proposed a resolution encouraging officials, employees and clients of the local government unit of La Trinidad, Benguet to use bicycle as an alternative mode of transportation in accordance to Republic Act No.8749 or the Philippine Clean Air Act of 1999 and following the Executive Order No.5, s.2018 by Mayor Romeo Salda declaring Thursday of every first week of the month as a Car Free Day in the municipality.

In the Bible (KJV) Luke 7:8 “For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.” We are all under a state where we follow rules and regulations, ordinances and laws. And if we are not to abide with them, then surely we will face penalty and violations. Abiding with them will make your life easier. However, the choice is still up to you. This is yours truly, Tita Ara Katter of 98.7 ZRadio FM, Ikit ng Bayan, a Sunday program, 10am to 1pm, that always reminds you “Ti Panagkaykaysa, mangiwanwan iti naranyag nga pagsayaatan.”
