BAGUIO CITY — The Cordillera Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) has temporarily reopened Kennon Road to a two-way vehicular traffic from 6pm on Friday, March 22 to 6am on Monday, March 25.
CDRRMC chairman and Office of Civil Defense (OCD) director Albert Mogol said this activity would enable them to assess if they could continue to open Kennon Road during weekends.
Mogol said only light vehicles weighing below five tons would be allowed to enter as safety is still the primary consideration for the reopening of the road.
At least nine areas along Kennon Road were found to be in critical condition following a study by geologists commissioned by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
“Hopefully it will be made permanent, ito ang talagang hinihingi natin sa public works and highways na tingnan nila yung projects na ginagawa nila diyan para sa madaling panahon ay mabuksan na nila yan permanently,” Mayor Mauricio G. Domogan said.
The 36-kilometer project was constructed by American Colonel Lyman Kennon during the American colonization in 1903. It opened for travel on January 29, 1905 and has since been the primary road coming up to the summer capital.
Kennon Road connects Baguio City to the lowland towns of Rosario and Pugo in La Union province.
