MAYOR APPEALS ANEW FOR RESPONSIBLE WASTE DISPOSAL

BAGUIO CITY

Mayor Benjamin Magalong appealed anew to residents and visitors to observe proper waste disposal at all times to avoid flooding and
other environmental hazards. The mayor reminded that improperly discarded waste end up in the drainage system effectively clogging the same and causing flooding along roads and at the main drainage at City Camp. May we again remind residents and tourists to dispose of trash responsibly by using designated bins and avoiding littering in streets, gutters and waterways. Additionally, ensuring that waste is properly bagged and securely tied helps prevent debris from entering the drainage systems,” the mayor said. “By working together to maintain clean and clear drainage systems, we can mitigate the risk of flooding that endangers lives and properties and further protecting our environment,” he said.

A complaint was received recently on the status of the steel screens being installed at the drainage inlets at the boundary of each of the barangays surrounding the City Camp basin aimed at reinforcing flood mitigation measures in the area. A resident of Lower Quarry where a screen is being installed complained that garbage get stuck and piled up at the screen cover even at the slightest downpour causing inconvenience to residents. The City Engineering Office under Acting City Engineer Richard Lardizabal immediately coordinated with the contractor to assist the barangay officials in the cleaning and removal of the waste. Upon turn-over of the project, the barangay and residents will take charge of the maintenance of the same as earlier agreed on. “The project is under the Barangay Priority Projects funded through the Local Development Fund as identified by the barangay. It was previously resolved that the barangay and its constituents would be responsible for cleaning the screens, with designated barangay personnel and residents assigned to clean within their respective
jurisdictions,” Lardizabal said.
