Mayor Isko allows highland vegies in Divisoria during Sto Nino Fiesta

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet, Jan. 17(PIA) – Cordillera farmers may be allowed to deliver and sell their produce at the Divisoria Market during the Feast of the Santo Niño de Tondo this weekend.
Benguet Governor Melchor Diclas said Manila Mayor Francisco ‘Isko’ Moreno Domagoso gave assurance that the produce from Northern Luzon such as highland vegetables from Benguet and other provinces in the Cordillera will continue to be sold and traded at the Divisoria from Jan. 17 to 19, 2020, during the festivities in Tondo Diclas together with representatives from the local government unit of La Trinidad, and traders and farmers from the La Trinidad Trading Post met with Mayor Isko on Wednesday, Jan. 15, at the Manila City Hall to ask for consideration following initial information that several roads around the Divisoria would be closed to give way for the Feast of the Santo Niño de Tondo this weekend.
Domagoso clarified that the closure will only affect Recto, Ylaya-Tondo, and Candelaria areas and not the whole Divisoria. The city government of Manila he said is very much willing to help the farmers in Northern Luzon to sell their produce in Manila and other markets in the country thru the Divisoria which is among the biggest trading center of vegetables and other products in Metro Manila.
He also added that the city government of Manila is ready to welcome the tons of vegetables from the Cordillera and other areas with its 17 public markets being managed and operated by the city government.
At least 80 percent of highland vegetables being sold in the Metro Manila markets and other markets in the Visayas and Mindanao areas come from the La Trinidad Trading Post.
Divisoria accommodates more than 500, 000 kilograms of assorted highland vegetables everyday out of the 1.2 to 1.5 million kilograms of vegetables transported from the La Trinidad Trading Post daily.
Farmers and traders from the La Trinidad Trading Post earlier this week the sought the help of the officials of La Trinidad and Benguet to ask Mayor Moreno to allow vegetable trading in Divisoria during the festivities in Tondo to avoid huge losses.
