BAGUIO CITY
The city government is speeding up plans to erect several multi-level parking buildings to ease the lack of parking areas in the Summer Capital according to Mayor Benjamin Magalong. In an interview, Jan. 15, the Mayor said he has been meeting on a weekly basis with other concerned local officials to fasttrack the put up of said parking facilities.
“We have already identified about 13 areas to establish the structures that would generate around seven thousand public parking slots but our target is a minimum of 14 thousand parking slots,” Magalong said. At present, the entire city of Baguio has only 2,700 public parking slots for an estimated 56,000 registered vehicles including 15,000 motorcycles.
To counter this lack, the local government needs to deploy traffic personnel and law enforcement and also remind visitors trekking to the city to use public transport instead of their private vehicles, he said. Thousands of tourists are again expected to converge here in time for this year’s Baguio
Flower Festival (Panagbenga) slated to commence on February 1.
