Portion of perfecto street to be named after BCU founder

Councilor Betty Lourdes Tabanda wants to commemorate Dr. Margarita “Itang” Joven by proposing to name a portion of Perfecto Street as “Margarita Fernandez Drive”.

The portion stretches from the junction of Lake Drive to the Junction of Harrison Road under the footbridge. “The late Dra. Margarita ‘Itang’ Joven Fernandez, together with her husband, founded a vocational school named Centro Academy in 1945.

From its humble beginnings, this school was later transformed to its present status as a university, and is now known as Baguio Central University (BCU),” Tabanda narrated. “In 1979, she became the first president of the University and, through her leadership; it expanded its academic programs and infrastructure development.”

Tabanda praised Fernandez for “bringing honors to the City of Baguio” through her local and international awards and for her being a champion of women’s welfare, thus the reason for naming said portion of the street after her.

Under the ordinance, once approved, the City Engineering Office (CEO) will take necessary actions in the implementation including the installation of the necessary street sign indicating the new name of the drive.

The City Assessors Office, City Planning Office, and other concerned agencies will be furnished a copy of the ordinance “for proper guidance and plotting in the official maps of Baguio City.”

The Proposed ordinance was approved on first reading on January 6, 2020 during the City Council’s Regular Session and was referred to the Committee on Education, Culture, Creativity, and Historical Research for further study and recommendation.
