BAGUIO CITY – The Persons with Disability Affairs Office (PDAO) led the celebration of the 41st National Disability Presevention & Rehabilitation (NDPR) week themed “Lokal na Pamahalaan, Kabalikat sa Pagtupad ng Karapatan ng mga Taong May Kapansanan” with the City Government of Baguio at the City Multipurpose Hall on Wednesday, July 31, 2019.
NDPR week is observed every third week of July by virtue of Proclamation No.1870 which aims to stimulate public awareness of the problems of disability in the uplifting of the skills and social conditions of the disabled members of the society.
This year’s celebration is composed of different competitions like solo singing, chorale competition, instrumental playing, interpretative dance and cultural dance participated by different schools from different places in Benguet, including the Baguio School of Deaf; Easter College-SPED Department; St. Francis de Sales-Learning Resource Center; Baguio City-SPED Department; Northen Luzon School for the Visually Impaired Incorporated; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Montessori; OLACSIMOLA; and St. John Paul II Learning Center.
Participants included the visually impaired, the hearing impaired, and those with learning and intellectual disability.
John Paredes of the Federation of Persons with Disability, in his keynote message during the event’s kickoff activity on Wednesday, cited the importance of equipping PWD students with skills for their effective integration not only in school but also for the society.
A parent of a child enrolled at SPED said that it is very nice that the government has this kind of event wherein their kids are given the privilege to show off their skills and talents.
“Masaya kasi kahit ganun sila, nakakapag-interact pa rin sila kahit last year lang siya pumasok sa SPED, active ang anak ko sa physical activities lalo na sa sports, sinasali siya ng mga teachers niya, nasa intellectual and learning disability kasi siya e.”
The city has also provided the PWDs a new location for their convenience. “In behalf of persons with disabilities we would like to thank the city government of Baguio for providing us the persons with disabilities office located at the 2nd floor of City Mayor’s office,” PDAO II Samuel G. Aquino said.
