RISING ROAD ACCIDENTS IN BAGUIO CITY: A CALL TO ACTION FOR ROAD SAFETY

The traffic management office of the Baguio City Police Office reveals a concerning trend of increasing road accidents in the city that causes to alarm the city residents involving speeding motorcycle as well as vehicles in the main thoroughfares in the city. According to BCPO data, road accidents have risen by 25% from January to April 2025 compared to the same period last year. The causes of these accidents are multifaceted, including driver error, vehicle problems, and unfamiliarity with roads.

Road accidents in Baguio City have taken a concerning turn, with a notable 25% rise reported from January to April 2025, amounting to 316 incidents. Driver behavior is a significant contributor, with human error accounting for the vast majority of cases. The statistics also reveal that four-wheeled vehicles are predominantly involved in these accidents, whereas motorcycles play a relatively smaller role. This trend highlights the pressing need for enhanced road safety measures and awareness campaigns, according to data from the
Baguio City Police Office.

P/Col. Ruel Tagel City Director of the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) emphasized the office’s commitment to enhancing traffic law enforcement and promoting road safety. To address this issue, the BCPO is implementing various measures, including road safety
campaigns and programs to educate the public on the importance of adhering to traffic signs and regulations. Through collaborative efforts between authorities and the public, road accidents can be reduced, ensuring the safety of all motorists and pedestrians in
Baguio City.

To promote safe driving, it is essential to stay alert and avoid distractions while driving, such as using your phone or eating. Following traffic rules, including obeying speed limits, traffic signals, and road signs, is also crucial. Regularly checking your vehicle’s brakes, tires, and lights can help prevent accidents caused by mechanical failures. Wearing your seatbelt and ensuring all passengers do the same can
significantly reduce the risk of injury or death in the event of an accident. Being courteous to other road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and other drivers, can also help prevent accidents.
