Saleng fun run fires, starts festivity for the environment

The first of the four sporting events that are part of the second staging of the Saleng Festival will fire off Sunday.
The Saleng Fun Run will be a three-event competition that will start at the Burnham Lake Drive at 5 AM and will expect more than 300 runners from both private and government offices, said City Environments Parks Management Officer Rhenan Diwas.
Diwas said the runners will be seeing action in the 3-kilometer, 5 km, and 10 km run that is open to young and even the old with the youngest at three years old, Khalie Naethan Santos, son of the national athlete for athletics Katherine Santos and with the oldest at 76.
Gun starts at 5 Am for the 10K run, while the other races will start 10 minutes apart after.
The entry fee, which is inclusive of race singlet and bib, is a minimal PhP150 for the shorter races, while PhP200 will be charged to a participant for the 10K race in the event backed by Benguet Rep. Eric Yap.
The events to be staged the week after are the go-cart race on June 11 while the Sunday events are the boat races and fish catching competition.
The Saturday event will have races for 12 under, 15 under, and 18 under with the latter two divided into men and women categories. The boat races on Sunday will be for the boatmen which are open for single and double and will have participants from all the boat concessionaires at the lake.
The fishing competition in coordination with Covid-19 survivor and fishing enthusiast Rafael Serrano will be in the afternoon of Sunday. Serrano said the best time to fish is 2 PM and will be a one-hour fishing activity with the winners either coming up with the heaviest or biggest. A special category will be made for children.
As Serrano does in his morning fishing at 5 AM, the fish caught will be released once it is measured and weighed.
The Saleng Festival will wrap up in September.
It is backed by the National Grid Corporation Corporation, The Manor at Camp John Hay, Newtown Plaza, Megatowers, the Police Regional Office – Cordillera, and the Baguio Water District.
