UB boxers among world’s bests

Three female boxers from the University of Baguio and a male pugilist are among the world’s bests, the (Amateur) International Boxing Association released Tuesday, Jul 28. Nesthy Petecio is the world’s second best behind Yu Ting Lin of Chinese Taipeh.
In her latest Facebook post, Petecio said “Isang hakbang lang para sa rank 1. Kinapos ako ng konti sa Olympic qualifier kaya di ko nakuha. (One more step for the rank 1. I was short in my bid in the Olympic qualifier, so I did not get it).”
“Next time akin na yang slot nay an (Next time, I will get that slot),” added Petecio referring to the Olympic qualifier which has one more qualifier, in Paris, France that was supposed to be staged last May but has been postponed for a yet specified date.
Petecio was ranked second also by the same body in 2017 when she was in the 54 kg. category. Petecio lost to Japan’s Sena Irie in the quarterfinals of the Amman games, denying her of the Olympic which teammate Irish Magno has secured in the same competition. Irie is currently ranked 13th in the AIBA ranking.
The rest of the top 10 are: Omelia Gabrielle Wahner of Germany atthird, Sonia (one name) of India is fourth, followed by England’s Kariss Artingstall. Occupying the 6th – 10th slots are: Jemyma Betrain (Nehterlands), Stanamira Petrova (Bulgaria), Leonela Sanchez (Argentina) Liudmila Vorontsova of Russia and Junhua Yin of China.
Former world champion Josie Gabuco is tied at 10th place in the 48 kg. division led by Russian Ekaterina Palcteva. Aira Villegas is eighth in the 54 kg. category ruled by Hsiao Wen Huang of Chinese Taipeh.
“Wala po dito si Irish (Irish is not included here),” said Petecio referring to the Olympics bound Magno, who did not see action in the AIBA held October last year. Flyweight Carlo Paalam, who failed to get an Olympic slot in Amman, Jordan last March, is ranked 12th which is ruled by Amit of India.
Reigning AIBA champion Shakhobidin Zoirov is ranked number two. Petecio is back home in South Digos, Davao del Sur where she will train with her dad.
