UC-UB volleyball rivalry resumes in CVODLESS II

LA TRINIDAD, BENGUET – Ten girls high school teams and four male teams will make up the junior Cordillera Volleyball Developmental League for Elementary Secondary Schools that opens on Saturday at the Benguet State University gym here.
Cordillera Volleyball Association president Danilo Edwardo said they are ready to start the second part of the CVODLESS 2018 with University of Baguio hoping to pip rival University of the Cordilleras in another show of its new strength that saw the red shirts win three of the four titles last year.
He said that games start at 8am.
While it failed miserably in the CVODLESS 2018 Part 1 last month when it lost in straight sets to UC’s ABCamp team in the final four, UB’s junior high school team hopes to retain one of its titles in the nine year old league designed for grassroots volleyball.
But a complete UC team will be UB’s greatest stumbling block with team captain Joanlyn Maddatu returning in her green shirt to give the Baby Lady Jaguars the leadership it lacked when they survived HCA-Blue last month to win the CVODLESS I.
“With Joanlyn back and of course Syzzle (Rosario) to be setting up, we expect to have a more cohesive team,” said UC coach Sherry Ann Floresca, who last month used her young ABCamp team to weather eliminations top notcher HCA, also an ABCamp alumni.
Maddatu was over qualified in CVODLESS I for having played in regional and national competitions, while Rosario had to attend to the wake and funeral of a close relative.
Rosario’s big job fell on a pair of 12-year olds, Trisha Vidal and Herschell Copes, younger sibling of former UC setter Ella as UC groped for form and lost twice in the eliminations – to HCA and Guisad Valley National High School.
She will again depend on CVODLESS I most valuable player Kier Angela Sabas, Radinka Dumawor and Hanzelmae Antolin, the first batch of ABCamp, to make UC’s presence felt.
Other teams seeing action are GVNHS, Hope Christian Academy, BSU, Greyhounds 1 and 2, Baguio Central University, Saint Louis Aurora Hill and Sablan National High School.
UB, meanwhile, hopes to win the boys side with only Sablan and two GVNHS teams to contend with.
Last month, ABCamp survived a 10 point second set deficit then avenged a three set loss to eliminations top notcher HCA-Blue by eking a 25-14, 26-24, 25-19 victory at the Baguio Central School court.
Meanwhile, Mabini Elementary School swept Lucban Elementary School for the boys title with Rayven Arances, brother of UC stalwart Reynae, as the MVP. However, Lucban dominated the individual awards with, surprisingly, four of its players taking an award.
The Lucban girls survived a first set loss to host BCS but won the last two to win the girls plum.
A third competition that will include senior high school players will be staged next month. PML / ABN
