BAGUIO CITY
The more than two years promise for the put up of a Baguio City High School art gallery that started in February 2023 with an art exhibit at the former the Manor Camp John Hay is finally over. Councilor Leandro Yangot, BCHS principal Whitney Dawayen and arts program
head Francis Lumiwes opened the first high school art gallery Thursday. “It is a work in progress yet,” said Yangot as more improvements are needed for the gallery especially its frontage that Lumiwes is 95 percent done.
The Alpine exhibit organized by Yangot staged with Claire Jaun Torres started the ball rolling for the put up of the gallery measuring about
four by 12 meters. Four art works were sold immediately of which half was used for the construction of the gallery, said Yangot. “It is long
overdue, inauguration was postponed thrice,” admitted Dawayen. The BCHS gallery is one of the many art activities done by Yangot. Yangot started his free arts lesson advocacy in 2021 after arriving from Switzerland.
In 2022, he also started a free art lessons at the biggest and oldest public high school north of Manila. “ We want this to be a benchmark as this will spur other schools to open their own art gallery,” added Yangot. Dawayen, meanwhile, said that BCHS will become the city’s center for art workshops, of course with help from councilor Yangot,” he added .
