PUDTOL, Apayao
Apayao, it appears, is the new powerhouse in volleyball. This after Apayao volleyball teams upset many time defending champion Baguio to win three of the four events in the Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association (CARAA) 2023 championships over the weekend. Apayao has earlier made its mark in the three year delayed annual competitions when it leap frogged past Benguet to finish second during the regular competitions last May 1 and now added four mints in the team event which is the most sought after basketball.
Apayao’s spikers did not only clinch the gold medals in elementary girls and boys but the secondary girls. Apayao defeated their fierce voleyball rivals Baguio City in three intense championship matches last June 4. Hosted by the province, the two-day regional sports meet held in EKB Gymnasium in Pudtol witnessed the rise of Apayao volleyball squads who proved to be an unstoppable force throughout the tournament.
In elementary girls, team Apayao, represented by Alem Elementary School (AES) outplayed team Baguio in a three set thriller filled with intense rallies and breathtaking plays. Baguio’s boys squad also suffered the same fate when it came tumbling down against the kids from the Kabugao Central School (KCS) squad in the elementary boys category after a hard-fought championship match.
Moreover, team Apayao, composed of Pudtol Vocational High School (PVHS) volleybelles, continued their impressive run in the highly-anticipated championship match against Baguio in secondary girls.
Entering the finals with unblemished record, the home team displayed exceptional athleticism as they secure the coveted title in four sets. Coached by Myrien Agustin (Elem. Girls), Beverly Biyong (Elem. Boys), and Marieflor Tomas (Sec. Girls), all three volleyball squads will represent the region in the Palarong Pambansa pre-qualifying meet to be held on July 17-21 in Laoag City.
In a post, the coaches said: “As the victorious teams celebrate their triumphant conquest of the elusive title, the entire province joins them in acknowledging their achievements.” Gov. Elias C. Bulut, Jr. and Congresswoman Eleanor C. Bulut-Begtang extend their commendation to the athletes for their exceptional performances and well-deserved victories.
