CAR LANDS 3RD NATIONAL PRISAA

Team Cordillera composed of athletes from the University of Baguio, University of the Cordilleras and Baguio Central University finished third over-all in the National Private School Athletic Association (PRISAA) Games in
Legazpi, Albay last week. The team secured a 54-46 54 gold-silver-bronze medal haul in the senior’s division to
improve from the fourth-place finish last year when Zamboanga City hosted the event. UB had a lion’s share in the
medal output for the region as it collected 32 gold medals, 15 of which came from archery while it was declared over-all winner in taekwondo where seven gold medals was earned.

There were four gold medals earned in athletics and swimming, while women’s boxing chipped in two mints. Archer Shanylle Samson was UB’s golden girl with six gold medals by winning the 30, 60-meter distance, overall FITA,
mixed team, and in the Olympic round and the team event. The team is composed also og Keturah Collene Gonzales,
Kateleen Yanna Marie Somera and Faith Anne Laruan. Gonzales earned two more two gold medals on her own by
topping the 30 and the 70 meter distance. Cyrus Ebenezer Obenita had two of his own by ruling the men’s 50 – meter
distance and with Edison Louis Jacoba, the team event gold.

Other multiple gold medal winners are Hassan Lorana who topped the 800- and 1500-meter run, swimmers Jan Mikaela Caruncho (50 meter and 100 meters breast stroke) and Joshua Alexander Ramos (400 and 1500-meter freestyle). UC Jaguars chipped in 13 golds including 22 silvers and four bronze medals. Archer Reinzbert Burgos led the gold medal haul for UC bagging the top honors in the 30 – M, 60 – M, Fita Round, Mixed Team and Men’s Team
event with Jose Alexandrius Lazaro. Weightlifter Jona Mae Laroza meanwhile had three gold medals topping the 83kg clean and jerk, 83kg snatch, and 83kg total.

Creishna Kate Gayudan had a gold in taekwondo winning in the bantamweight division. Last year CAR bagged a 47
29-34 which is seven gold less, 17 silvers, and 20 bronze than its production this year. The BCU Eagles, meanwhile had nine gold medals in weightlifting and a lone gold from boxing thanks to Adan Awas. Emilyn Ngan-oy, Julie Anne
Ogoc and Sarah Garwageo were the best performers from BCU with their three gold medals performance each. Ngan-oy took the top podium in the 44kg category (snatch, clean and jerk, and overall weight lifted), while Ogoc took the 48kg category (snatch, clean and jerk, and overall weight lifted).

Garwageo topped the 54kg category (snatch, clean and jerk, and overall weight lifted). Reigning Baguio Benguet
Educational Athletic League champion Baguio College of Technology, which comprised the bulk of the region’s
women’s volleyball team, had a bronze to show. Central Visayas was declared the overall championship after a 119-73
65 haul, way ahead of Western Visayas (79-38-55), Tuguegarao City will host next year’s PRISAA which is slated between March and April due to the elections slated in May.
