DAD PUSHES HAZARD PAY FOR CITYPAID WORKER EXPOSED TO RISK

Councilor Leandro Yangot, Jr. has proposed an ordinance granting hazard pay to all city-paid workers exposed to
occupational hazards in the city. The proposed measure intends to provide these workers equitable compensation “based on the principle of equal remuneration for workers of equal value.”

It shall cover all city-paid workers under permanent, temporary, contractual, and casual status who are exposed
to occupational hazards and who have rendered at least one year of continuous and ‘faithful’ government service. Those who work on a part-time basis shall receive half of the amounts received by full-time personnel in the same situation.

The city mayor shall form a special health and safety task force consisting of employees to promulgate guidelines
necessary to implement the ordinance and to oversee all matters pertaining to safety and health in the workplaces.

Among the city government workers mentioned in the proposed ordinance who perform hazardous and/or
laborious duties are the garbage collectors of the General Services Office; integrated barangay tanods or the city’s police auxiliaries; personnel of the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Operations Center; personnel of
the Public Order and Safety Division under the City Mayor’s Office; personnel in of the City Engineering Office and
the City Buildings and Architecture Office in the carpentry, plumbing, maintenance and electrical sections; field workers from the City Environment and Parks Management Office; personnel of the City Veterinary and
Agriculture Office who are exposed to animal diseases; drivers of the city government; and health workers under the
City Health and Services Office.

“To address the call of the time, it is fitting for the city government to grant hazard pay to protect its workers in order to make them feel they are taken care of especially because it is their lives that are at stake,” Yangot said.
Their jobs are not for the fainthearted.

They are for people who strive to live life on the edge, are not afraid to get dirty, and will risk it all for a job well done,” he continued. The proposal has been referred to the Saggunian’s Committee on Ethics. Governmental Affairs and Personnel for review.
